Our emergency pediatric dentist is available to help your child when unforeseen incidents or symptoms threaten their oral health. While not every dental condition requires an emergency visit, some do, and it is important that they receive prompt treatment to prevent the condition from becoming irreversible. Let us look at what qualifies as a pediatric dental emergency and how we can help.
Broken teeth
An emergency pediatric dentist addresses various types of broken teeth, including:
- Cracks
- Craze lines
- Vertical root fractures
- Fractured cusps
- Complete split
They can result from the tooth weakening over time, general wear and tear, or trauma. The emergency pediatric dentist will assess the tooth by performing an X-ray and physical examination to determine the type and extent of the damage. For minor damage, like cracks or craze lines, the dentist can remove brittle structures and apply bonding material to prevent the damage from progressing and restore the tooth's appearance. However, it is important to note that craze lines are not considered an emergency, as they cause no pain and are rarely noticeable.
Moreover, if the damage is causing pain, as is usually the case with complete splits and vertical root fractures, the dentist may provide temporary crowns until a more permanent one may be crafted. However, it should be noted that in the case of a split tooth, the dentist must extract it and possibly provide a space saver or replacement, depending on whether it is a baby or adult tooth.
Dental intrusion
Pain does not automatically result from a fracture. Children can experience extreme pain when their tooth is forced deeper inside the jawbone, significant enough to damage the ligaments and sockets. Dental intrusions are most common with permanent teeth but can occur with baby teeth. Parents should contact the emergency pediatric dentist as soon as possible, who may save the affected tooth, jawbone, and surrounding teeth by repositioning the tooth and displaced jawbone.
Knocked out teeth
With kids, every day is an adventure and an opportunity to try new things. Unfortunately, this can result in a tooth getting knocked out. In a situation like this, it is important to keep in mind that the emergency pediatric dentist may be able to save the tooth. If able, save the tooth in a glass of milk— not water— or if the child is old enough and able, have them hold the tooth against their cheek until their appointment. While this may be uncomfortable, it helps ensure the tooth retains moisture. If the child is bleeding, use a clean cloth and have them bite down to apply pressure. Be sure to contact our office immediately and explain the situation.
Tooth pain
Tooth pain is a symptom of a deeper issue. It can result from an unseen fracture, infection, or decay. Pain is likely due to the inner part, the pulp chamber, or the roots being compromised. In older teens, it may result from impacted wisdom teeth. Try a cold compress or over-the-counter pain medications until the emergency pediatric dentist can get them in for an appointment to determine the cause. However, do not wait for an appointment because it can result in more extensive damage and, therefore, procedures.
