How a Children’s Dentist Differs from a General Dentist

Dentists are all trained to do similar things — treat patient’s with dental problems and help their patients maintain healthy oral hygiene. However, that isn’t to say that all dentists do and study the same exact things. There are all kinds of dental professionals who take special training in additional things to master an extra specialty.

Visiting a children’s dentist is going to be a much different experience from that of a general dentist. Most people may not know how different these visits can be, so being aware of how a children’s dentist differs from a general dentist can help one decide where they should go.

Today, we will outline the major differences between a children’s dentist and a general dentist. While it may seem obvious, there are a few big differences that most people may not think of.

Children’s dentist

Children’s dentists do the same thing that general dentists do - they aim to keep their patient's teeth clean and they aim to address any dental problems that may incur. However, one of the biggest differences is that a children’s dentist takes additional training in working with children!

A children’s dentist has to learn how to be more patient and kind with their patients because they are mostly children. And, as one may already know, children are often afraid of visiting the dentist because it can be scary for them. So, a children’s dentist has to know special ways to work with children to ensure that they aren’t too afraid.

A children’s dentist may incorporate silly games or fun equipment so that the child feels safe and views the appointment as fun instead of scary. A children’s dentist office is typically decorated with a theme that is appealing to children - with stuffed animals or sparkly decorations. Most children find this easier to warm up to instead of a standard dental chair with lots of scary tools.

It’s important to know that children’s dentist will do the same things during a checkup as a general dentist would. They inspect the teeth and gums while also ensuring that the child isn’t scared. A children’s dentist will keep an eye out for any problems such as cavities, as a general dentist does as well.

General dentist

General dentists offer the same services that a children’s dentist does except it may not be as fun and enjoyable. This is because a general dentist works on patients of all ages - including adults. While a general dentist can treat a child, it may not be as enjoyable for the child to visit a general dentist because they don’t specialize in children’s dentistry.

Just like with a children’s dentist, a general dentist will do proper cleanings and examinations of the teeth and gums while also checking for any problems within the mouth. They ensure that both the teeth and gums are in good condition and make recommendations on how to better care for the mouth.

The bottom line

Children’s dentists may be more appealing to children because they specialize in making a child feel safe and comfortable throughout their visit. But, both general and children’s dentists work to do the same thing — care for the teeth.
