Your Child’s First Visit to a Kid Friendly Dentist

Going to the dentist for the first time can be a nerve-wracking experience for children and their parents. However, a kid friendly dentist can ease these anxieties and make the experience more positive for both parents and kids. Not only do kid friendly dentists have the training to treat younger patients, but also they find great joy in helping children achieve long-term oral health. Read on to learn more about taking your child to the dentist for the first time.

Recommendations for a child’s first dental visit

The American Dental Association, or ADA, recommends that a child’s first dental visit occur between the time when the first tooth erupts and one year of age. Following these guidelines can prevent oral health problems, such as tooth decay (cavities) or gum disease. Also, it can help reduce dental anxiety as it exposes the child to a dentist early on.

When baby teeth decay

Deciduous teeth (primary or baby teeth) are prone to develop cavities. Just because the tooth will eventually fall out does not mean it is fine to let it decay. Cavities can be painful, and the decay could spread to the root of the tooth. Further, if the tooth is lost early, the remaining teeth may shift and interfere with the eruption of permanent teeth (adult teeth).

A kid’s first dental visit

A child’s first dental visit will typically take between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on several factors. These include the patient’s age, oral health status, and even the number of teeth. Here is what else a parent can expect from their child’s first visit to a kid friendly dentist:

Oral exam

A kid-friendly dentist will conduct a comprehensive examination of the child's mouth. They will examine baby teeth, the gums, bite, and jaw alignment. If there is any plaque or tartar on the primary teeth, the dentist will remove it to prevent tooth decay. They may also polish the teeth to improve their appearance and make it more difficult for plaque to develop.

While most patients receive dental X-rays, these may not be necessary if the child is only one year old and has no signs of tooth decay. However, if there are signs that a baby tooth is having trouble erupting, an X-ray could prove crucial in diagnosing the problem.

Oral hygiene advice

After the oral examination and teeth cleaning, the dentist can provide advice on how parents can help protect their child’s oral health at home. Parents are encouraged to ask about types of toothpaste to use, brushing frequency and techniques, flossing, and other important topics related to their child's dental health. A kid-friendly dentist can also recommend tooth-healthy foods and drinks for children.

Focus on comfort

A kid-friendly dental team will do what it can to make a good first impression on each patient. Often, this involves making the waiting room a kid-friendly place, such as with toys and children’s magazines. There may be a TV playing children’s shows, and the decor will likely be more colorful and inviting than the average dental office.

Once the child is in the dental chair, the dentist will speak to the child in an age-appropriate manner to help them feel more comfortable. They may also offer rewards at the end, such as a small toy or candy, if the parent approves. Ultimately, the goal is to help the child form positive associations with going to the dentist so they will be more willing to come back to maintain their oral health.
